The Investment and Export Promotion Agency (PROESA) participated in the delivery of the third and final phase of the Bósforo project, which will generate 100 MW of photovoltaic solar energy. The initiative was promoted and developed by the electric power distributor, AES El Salvador, in conjunction with the Multi Investment Corporation (CMI).
Bósforo is one of the most important projects that have recently been introduced in the country under a the diversification of the energy matrix strategy, in order to foster renewable sources. It has 10 plants of 10 MW each, for a total of 100 megawatts (MW) of energy, which amounts to an investment of US $ 160 million.
Enrique Crespo, CEO of CMI Capital, said that “through 10 generation plants distributed throughout the country, Bósforo will place the points of generation and distribution of energy closer to consumers, thus supporting the stability and reliability of the national electricity system, which confirms the long-term commitment of CMI in the development of El Salvador”.
The project has two phases completed, the first consists of three plants located in La Unión, Pasaquina and El Carmen. And the second, consists of four plants located in Jiquilisco, Sonsonate and two in Santa Ana.
The third phase, inaugurated on October 29 2019, consists of three plants, located in Nejapa, Apopa, and Guazapa, the latter project was delivered in its entirety by the President of the Republic, Nayib Bukele, authorities of AES and WCC. “Bósforo, represents an important contribution to strengthening the country’s energy security through diversification, and arises thanks to the strategic partner of two leading companies in the region such as AES and the Multi Investment Corporation,” said the executive president of AES El Salvador, Abraham Bichara, at the opening event.
This last project entered into full functionality yesterday, with approximately 44 thousand polycrystalline photovoltaic modules, three power stations and a substation that are directly connected to the distribution network to bring electric power to 33 thousand homes.
Bósforo is part of a strategy line of the AES Corporation, which is one of the largest energy generating companies worldwide and aims to reduce the intensity of its carbon emissions by 70% of its operations by 2030.In the same way, it will allow the corporation to continue transforming its services portfolio to renewable energy generation platforms, energy storage, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and implementing intelligent and efficient networks.
PROESA collaborated in streamlining all the procedures and permits necessary for the operation and implementation of the project, an effort that at the regional level is transforming the generation of energy through renewable sources, in order to contribute in the strengthening, diversification and sustainability of the energy matrix of El Salvador.
