El Salvador surpasses domestic tourism projection with more than 553,860 visitors

Easter Week in El Salvador was a success, as evidenced by figures from the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), which highlights that more than 553,860 people made tourism in the country for the holiday period.

The head of Mitur, Morena Valdez, affirmed that the number of visitors to El Salvador quadrupled during this past vacation, who opted mainly for beaches and mountains.

According to the institution, more than 191,000 people visited the beaches and 368,907 people enjoyed the national tourist parks.

The projection made by the state portfolio was 194,000 visitors in all tourist destinations; however, the projection was higher than the one they had in the same period of 2019.

In addition, 120,000 people entered through the borders and the International Airport of El Salvador. Of these figures, 44,000 Salvadorans abroad entered the country, mostly from the United States.

“We want to maintain this dynamic of the sector, we will work harder, offering Salvadorans and foreigners a quality tourism offer”, said the official.

According to Valdez, the record figures demonstrate the confidence that the population has in the actions taken by the government of President Nayib Bukele. In addition, they refute the accusations of opponents who claimed that the population would not go out during the holiday period due to the restriction of freedoms and the operations of the National Civil Police (PNC) and the Armed Forces, which focused exclusively on arresting gang members.

Likewise, Mitur assured that there was an influx of tourists from Guatemala, Honduras, the United States and Canada during the Holy Week vacation period. “They come because they know that we have excellent places, in short distances”, he commented.

The Government foresees that the country will receive more than $161 million in foreign currency income.

On the other hand, the Government will carry out a cleaning day organized by the Ministry of Tourism, the Mayor’s Office of San Luis La Herradura and prison inmates.
